excitatory postsynaptic potential

So Excitemas is coming and I'm all heaven in the pants feverish because my husband can't keep his mouth shut on what he got me.

Which means that what he got me is no longer my Christmas present.  Because Excitemas presents are supposed to be a surprise! We wrap them up to keep them a surprise!  It's like I always say, "wrap the shit up and put it under the tree."

(wait a minute. that sounds....weird, if you know what I mean)

yup. like I always say.

So I'm all sweating like a whore in church because me and my excitator are going to see Kathy Griffin!! Front Row Bitches!!

Where my gays at ya'll??!!  I'm so going to work the room before the show, interviewing potential gay boyfriends.  I'VE BEEN GAY BOYFRIEND SINGLE FOR TOO LONG!!

So, merci beaucoup, husband for hearing about the show on the radio and then rushing home and buying tickets and then a mere hour or 2 later hinting around how you really want to tell me what you just bought...AND  since this isn't my Excitemas present, you must have something REALLY SPECIAL in store for yo baby mama.... (please consider this a warning my thank-you note) AND NO, a new set of, say, white square dishes with matching bowls and cups IS NOT really Special!!  Though it would be nice to have...

Let this be a lesson to all my fellow femme fatales on what sort of Excitemas THEY can have if they just go bi, let their  gay boyfriend and/or husband watch, and once in a while go reverse cow-girl.

so magical...

(KIDDING, MOM)

Excitemas is coming!

This may be a boring post if you're not related to the kid! or a parent. or if you've got a whole list of other more exciting things to do.

tidbits regarding more fun than I can handle:

me: Milo, there is a box full of age-appropriate treasures in the living room, your room, the kitchen and in the bathroom. (read: all over the goddamn house!)
milo: got cds? got knives? got glass? got hair I can pull? got seive?

I have no idea why I gave you a link to seive.  How immature. Possibly to distract you from noticing that Milo plays underneath the stove.  Don't worry the stove is not in use so much. Usually. I guess. What's a stove?

me: Milo, here's a plastic spoon that is easy to handle, befitting of your mouth and scoops food nicely.
milo: Nah, I like your spoon better. It makes a much cooler sound when I bang it on the booster seat, table, window...see, listen: clang, bang, dang.....clang, bang, dang...hey, look how far I can throw it!!!

me: Milo, here's a shiney, plastic bowl for me to put your oatmeal in. AND it suctions to the table so you can easily scoop your food AND it stays safely on the table!
milo: Nah, I prefer your nice, ceramic bowl that you got as a wedding gift from Crate and Barrel (after clanging the bowl with the metal spoon, takes bowl and throws on the floor, said bowl now in several, broken, sharp pieces)

Awesome.

So WHY would I give him this bowl?  Because Milo knows the difference between 2.99 and 19.99.  I'm not even kidding.  He will eat the shit out of some oatmeal or other food if it's in a "grown-up" bowl.  Otherwise, he'll just play with the food...it's like he is testing me.  I totally passed. Sort of.

On the bright side, Milo is becoming more and more proficient with using a fork and spoon.  Though he gets much more practice with the spoon (I don't trust his flailing hands with a fork so much yet!).  He's becoming more insistent on feeding himself...of course, this is a mixture of bitter and sweet for me...(warning! warm fuzzy coming...)It's amazing how just a short time ago he was drinking from 4oz bottles every 2 hours, nestled in my arms, (at 2am, 3:30am, 5am...) and now he can feed himself oatmeal with a spoon, pick up french fries green beans with that good 'ol pincer grasp, and take a bite straight from a banana...all at a normal hour!

I'm not sure which I'm more estactic about proud of: The independent eatting or the daylight only eatting hours!

He's also getting better at communicating.  When I say "let's go upstairs" he knows exactly where to walk himself toward.  Then he'll stop at the gate, grab my hand and place it on the locked part in order to open and let us through...He's long since crawled up and down the stairs, and now (with assistance) he can walk back down the stairs!
He's also good at letting me put on his shoes!  This is a very exciting thing for me, seriously!  I had some anxiety regarding the whole shoe thing. I would flippantly say that he's a summer-born, barefoot, dread locks here we come, tree huggin', fuck the man kind of guy...but in reality I just didn't want to wrestle with him.  Diaper changes, snapping a onesie, pulling on pants and socks were and sometimes continue to be a wrestling match.  Except now we're all done with onesies...oh, thank god! So it's a huge relief that once I found the right size and kind of shoe (go Wal-mart! -Granimals, size 6 if anybody is thinking x-mass, just sayin') he gives me easy access to feet!

Let's go mama! I'm ready! Except this Maryland sweatshirt is a tad too small...notice the sleeves! I'm nearly 16 months! This is a 12 month sweatshirt! Arrrggghhh! Get with it, lady!

Which leads me to the moment he learned how to open the front door.  And then walk off the porch. Out into the abyss which is outsidewithoutaparentOMFG!!!

So clearly, I've pulled in my suppport team, came up with a game plan, and Fort Knox'd this bitch.

That is, until he figures out how to unlock said door. You know, move the lever thing from right to left. I figure I've got a good 6 inches and few months before I need to care about this again.

ok, last cute new thing update: Since he can open the front door and walk down the stairs.  It's now become a part of our routine to actually walk out together.  I'm not carrying the 26 pounder to the car!  I know. I know. And as he is holding my hand he guides me to his side of the car and tries to open the door.

let's all take a moment here to gather ourselves.

Right there is a little bit of genuis.

It's like he's going for some sort of trophy, medal, or ribbon for how many new things can I do this week?! But not the white Participant bullshit ribbons.  I got plenty of those when I was on a swim team in middle school. Big balls-out deal...So let's clap for being like daddy!!! Go Red Ribbons!

Ahem, it's the process not the product. The game not the score, the high five not the pat on the ass.  Shit, I know there's a lesson or a trite saying that I need to prepare when I'm tailgating at his football game sitting front row on the bleachers sane and soberly yelling, "THAT'S MY BABY OUT THERE! GO GET 'EM HONEY!" and he comes over, downtrodden, due to falling on his face and regally screwing up the game...again, let's clap for being like daddy!

Where was I? Oh yeah, age appropriate words of encouragment during those times the universe opens up an opportunity to learn, grow, mature....

Though I educated myself on sign language when Milo was a newbie, I haven't been giving a shit consistent at all with teaching Milo any specific signs.  Lately I've been trying to be more consistent with signing.  He is in that inbetween stage of wanting to talk, almost there, but can't get the words out/don't know the right words.

I love how at times he'll look at me intently in the eyes and babble something "nanana, mamama, ya. ya."

Yes. He is still MAD for the bouncy seat.  He's probably WAY over the weight limit. Probably.

Seeing as how food is a great motivater to learn I've gone back to teaching "eat" and "more." So after signing several times for a couple of days, he is now able to sign "eat" consistently as he takes my hand, pulls me to his booster seat, and climbs in the chair! He then will help me lock the tray in place...And if he isn't ready to eat...he is VERY good with letting me know this as well -squirming, whining as I try  to put him in the chair...Also, when he is ready to end the meal...needless to say we're working on the "all done" sign because right now it's "throw the food/bowl/sippie cup/spoon on the floor while screaming/shouting..."(hear that mama sigh)

He's gotten good at following through with the command, "Give to mama."  In the bath, when he is "all done" he would just throw the toys out of the tub.  Now he gets a kick out of placing each object in my hand.  He also has entered the stage of just ramdonly giving me objects, whether I ask for them or not.  And when I tell him, "Thank You!" he beams with such pride!  The "I'm such a good boy, I did something good" smile.  Makes my whole day...

So what's next in the land of learning?

learning  how to braid mama's hair...

("I hate that shirt you're wearing." "Yeah, well, you're earrings make your ass look big, and it's time to get your eyebrows and upperlip waxed again")

(We could be in a goddamn Noxema ad or Maybelline)

("I hate it when you do that"   "I don't give a shit")

("I should've worn my Superman boxers today")

("Who is this asshole?" "Who is this bitch?")

(Lame picture of the Potomac River)

Feel my forehead. I think I'm coming down with Milosis...

FML: I just found out Oprah has a book club...for children.  OH YES, I'm adding this to my list of "noone told me about this!" (OH! is that list getting looonggg!)  So next to "letting" my son eat dental floss, I'm not reading to him NEARLY enough and I'm probably not reading him ANY of those books on that list.  Well, not that I really looked at the list. But I'm sure none of those books can be found underneath his crib, in his closet or otherwise haphazardly spread around the house on the bookshelf...

I didn't buy Halloween candy until the day of Halloween. I see my neighbors putting up lights and decorations weeks ahead of the event date.  Milo's Halloween costume was borrowed.  A friend just happened to ask what I was dressing Milo up as.  I just shrugged and looked confused.  She promptly handed over 2 (!) costumes.

I'm a big effing slacker...I'm working on it.  Possibly gonna put it on my New Years Resolution list. But I don't want to get too crazy...I'm still working on this years resolution: being more considerate. If you listen closely you'll hear the sound of my husbands laughter...

Enough of the rambles, yesterday was Milo's15 month check-up!  Here are the current stats of the big boy:

height: 34 inches (just above 95th percentile) -grew 2 inches since his 12 month appt
weight: 26.5 lbs (75th percentile) -gained 3lbs

This was the first appt. that he didn't need to put on his birthday suit to weigh in.  They expected him to stand (and stay!) on the scale, like grown ups.  Apparently he's big boy now. Booo....

I was surprised by the weight gain considering his diet mostly consists of peanut butter, fruit roll-ups, cheerios and milk.  And oatmeal, .5 banana, the occasional whatever is on my plate, dental floss, toilet paper and tylenol. and baby ora gel.

damn he gets more nutrition than I originally thought.

This was also the first appt. they did an "autism screening."  He passed with flying colors except for one question.  I was asked if he pretends to talk on the phone.  I replied, "no, he doesn't put the phone to his ear...but he does pretend he's texting, checking his friends facebook status and updating his blog...I think maybe you need to update this questionaire..."

And we talked of things like time outs, behavior modification, and swine flu vaccinations.  Christ, pretty soon we'll be talking about puberty, driving, and the latest in cell phone family plans...

but not yet, little man, oh no...not yet...

baby skills or "come show mama's friend how you can shit in the toilet!"

Alrighty then.  Halloween -we are all set.   "You got rants?  I know your kid is cute and all. What kid isn't cute when you've covered their face in flowers/bloody vampire juice/pumpkin etc."

We will now resume our Rants.

You ever have an innocent "catching up/what's new with you?" convo with a mom (you don't have to be a parent to relate to this one).

*disclaimer: this is about multiple moms (including myself), no one particular mom.  Or maybe it is....fuck it, whatever...you know who you are...

Mom says, " XY (insert generic baby name here, like Joe or Milo) is now saying X (insert an actual pronoun, adjective, or noun here not baba, dada, mama) or is now doing Y (insert above average gross motor skill).

And I'm all, "Wow, really?!  How old is your child again? 14 months!? That's amazing!

And then you're thinking, possibly saying out loud.  Is my kid retarded have special needs?  Should I be spending more time with my baby rather than FBing cleaning the bathroom and doing the laundry and scouting the local paper for educational yet entertaining and age-appropriate activities?

And then when you see the little twerp baby Einstein and you say to him/her, "Say X!, Do Y!  Your mommy says you can..."

And then they just stare at you blankly, or better yet, their face turns red and they start grunting.

And the mom is all, "She totally knows how to X.  Of course, she won't do/say it now!"

And you're thinking, possibly saying out loud, "Your kid can't do shit.  What a dissapointment.  You're an asshole.  You made me doubt my parenting skills.  Made me think I have a FB problem and that I need to back off on my gym time.  I need my cardio goddamit!  I drink too many energy drinks and wine not to be working out at least 30 minutes a day! Do you hear me you crazy, delusional meth addict?!?"

I keep my expectations low realistic when it comes to parenting!  That way one day I can tell a fellow friend,  "My son is amazing. At the age of 5 he is finally shitting on the toilet!  Oh, we are so proud! You wanna come see?!"

Halloween

Here's a snippet of The Easy E's '09 Halloween:

Costume #1, the daytime costume-Police Officer:

The costume does come with a hat...but, Milo is not much of a hat person these days...In a side note, it also has handcuffs and a belt.  (crickets).  I thought this costume was most appropriate given I was pulled over by the po-po the day before. Why so?  I failed to stop at a stop sign.  No, I did not get a ticket.  Yes, Milo was with me.  No, I wasn't drunk.

Milo with "the bearded lady!"  My hope is that when Justin retires from the Navy, he'll grow his hair out and join a Metallica cover band.  We still have plenty of time before this idea takes off...

Mr. Milo, with Ya-Ya, cracking nuts for pumpkin cupcakes! Yum-O!

"Pay no attention to where this pen is, Ya-Ya...just look into my eyes...."

Time to change into a Giraffe!

I love you, my little Giraffe Man!

Half Giraffe/Half Po-Po (with a cell phone!)

We did attempt actual "trick or treating" but when he was handed candy, Milo just threw it on the ground.  So we settled for strolling around, admiring the MANY costumes of the neighborhood families.

and then back at home with Uncle Ben!

Since this was the night of changing the clocks back an hour, we occupied Milo with a little ride in a laundry basket....weeeeee...!!!

Before closing the night in, a family shot of me, my little bro, my mama, and the little one we call Milo...

A successful Halloween indeed!
